originally the common law of northern France, a code of laws instituted in New France in 1663 and contributing much to the civil code in force in modern Quebec.
1897  The Custom of Paris, which had been the law of Canada under the French, was now made valid in all civil affairs.
1905  By the Quebec Act of 1774 the Custom of Paris was to be continued in disputes relative to property and civil rights, but in criminal matters the law of England.
